Spotify is rolling out updates to its audiobook and reading features, expanding the platform’s book ecosystem. Readers in the US and UK can now purchase printed books directly through the Android Spotify app via a new integration with Bookshop.org, with iOS support expected next week. The updates also include expanded language support for Page Match, a camera-based reading synchronization feature, and the rollout of Recap, an AI-powered audiobook summary tool.
Physical book sales through Bookshop.org integration
Spotify users in the US and UK can now purchase printed books through a new integration with Bookshop.org on the Android Spotify app, with iOS support expected next week. The partnership was announced in February. Bookshop.org founder and CEO Andy Hunter stated at the time that “Spotify is bringing in more readers, and I’m all for anything that grows the size of the pie.“
The integration extends Spotify’s existing media ecosystem—music, podcasts, and audiobooks—into a retail workflow for physical publications. According to the source, the goal is to make it easier to “jump into your next novel or pick up where you left off,” even when switching between audio and physical formats.
Page Match expands to 30+ languages
Page Match, a feature that uses a device’s camera to sync a reading spot across formats, is expanding to more than 30 additional languages, including French, German, and Swedish. The feature syncs a reading position in a physical or ebook with an audiobook, allowing users to switch between formats while maintaining their place in the text.
AI-powered audiobook summaries now available on Android
Recap, an AI-powered audiobook recap feature that summarizes what users have already listened to, is now available on Android following its iOS launch in November. The feature provides a summary of audiobook content users have already consumed.
Audiobook Charts expand to Germany and add kids category
Spotify is expanding audiobook discovery through charts. Audiobook Charts are now available in Germany, showing which books are trending on the platform. A new dedicated chart for kids and family-friendly audiobooks is launching in the US and UK.
Spotify’s product strategy
Owen Smith, Spotify’s global head of audiobooks, commented on the updates: “These updates demonstrate our continued ambition to make reading fit into modern life. Whether it’s discovering a book the same way you’d find a song or podcast on Spotify, picking up the audiobook on your commute, using Page Match to switch to a physical copy at home, or jumping back in with a Recap, we’re making it easier for people to engage with books while supporting growth for authors and publishers along the way.“
The updates reflect Spotify’s approach to treating reading as a multi-format experience, with tools designed to help users discover books, switch between audio and physical formats, and resume where they left off.
