Spotify is rolling out a “Verified by Spotify” badge program in 2026, designed to confirm that a real person is behind an artist profile and their music. Verified artists will display a green checkmark on their Spotify profile.
The program is aimed at combating spam, fake accounts, and the growing presence of AI-generated content on the platform. At launch, AI personas and profiles that primarily upload AI-generated music are not eligible for verification. Spotify did leave open the possibility of expanding eligibility in the future, noting that “the concept of artist authenticity is complex and quickly evolving.”
Verification is not automatic. Spotify requires “consistent listener activity and engagement over time” before an artist qualifies — a threshold that suggests lower-traffic artists may not be prioritized. Rather than requesting government-issued identification, Spotify says it evaluates activity both on and off its platform, including social media presence, merchandise sales, and concert dates.
Despite those requirements, Spotify says that “more than 99% of artists Spotify listeners actively search for” will be verified at launch. That group includes a significant number of independent acts alongside major-label artists. Verification approvals will continue on a rolling basis after launch.
Spotify is also beta testing a new artist details feature it compares to nutritional labels, presenting key information — such as milestones, album releases, and touring activity — in a condensed, easy-to-read format.
The verification program could give listeners a clearer signal about the origin of the music they stream, as AI-generated tracks have become increasingly common on major platforms. For artists, the badge may serve as a meaningful way to distinguish their profiles from automated or fake accounts.
