Uber and Chinese autonomous vehicle company WeRide have expanded their driverless robotaxi operations in Dubai, marking a significant milestone in autonomous mobility. The service, operated by Tawasul, now covers key districts like Dubai Silicon Oasis and commercial areas such as Jabal Ali Industrial First. This move follows the government’s approval for a driverless vehicle trial permit, signaling a deeper integration of autonomous technology in the Middle East.
The collaboration between Uber and WeRide, with Uber holding a 5.82% stake in WeRide, demonstrates their commitment to advancing autonomous transportation. Uber’s increased investment in WeRide and the strategic commercial partnership aim to expand the robotaxi service to 15 more cities in the coming years.
By introducing fully driverless vehicles in Dubai, Uber is creating a hybrid transportation ecosystem where autonomous vehicles and human drivers coexist, ensuring a resilient and efficient network. This initiative not only enhances the local transportation options but also sets a precedent for global adoption of autonomous mobility solutions.
