Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the user experience in weather forecasting apps. The Weather Company, known for the Weather Channel, has introduced an AI-powered Weather Assistant in its Storm Radar app. This feature allows users to customize their forecast views by toggling between radar, temperature, wind, and lightning layers. Additionally, the Weather Assistant can integrate with other apps, such as calendars, to provide personalized weather notifications and summaries aligned with daily plans.
This advanced functionality, priced at $4 per month and currently exclusive to iOS, aims to cater to a broad audience, from casual observers to seasoned storm chasers. Joe Koval, a senior meteorologist at the Weather Company, highlights the convenience this AI integration brings, simplifying tasks like deciding the best time to walk a pet based on weather conditions.
While major smartphone platforms like Android and iOS already offer built-in weather functionalities, third-party weather apps like Storm Radar, Carrot Weather, and Rain Viewer continue to innovate with AI-driven capabilities. These apps, including the upcoming release of the Android version of the Storm Radar app, demonstrate the growing influence of AI in enhancing weather forecasting for users.
